WHAT IS SQUASH?

Squash is a racket sport played in a closed, four-walled court. The game developed in England in the nineteenth century before spreading throughout the world. While there used to be both hardball and softball varieties in the United States, singles squash is almost entirely a softball game (although many clubs still have active hardball doubles communities).

SQUASH IS HEALTHY!

  • “Healthiest sport in the world” (Forbes Magazine)
  • A recent study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found participants in racket sports were healthier than participants in any other sport.
  • Playing squash is a high intensity interval training (HIIT) workout. On average players burn 750 calories per hour.

SQUASH IS GREAT FOR KIDS!

  • Squash is easy to learn and everyone can progress quickly to match play.
  • More than 200 colleges and universities in the United States have courts. Every Ivy League school has a varsity squash team.
  • Junior squash is growing in the United States with regular local/regional tournaments and lots of opportunities for summer enrichment.

Squash has a long, storied history in Cleveland with the first courts built in the early 1900s. Cleveland is now home to Urban Squash Cleveland, junior squash programs at Cleveland Racquet Club and Cleveland Skating Club, and professional men's, women's and hardball doubles tournaments annually.
